Why I Drink Black Coffee Without Sugar
Coffee is my main go to drink, apart from tea and the occasional zero calorie beverages.
Like everyone else I used to drink my coffee with creamer and sugar. The high sugar content gave me a quick kick of energy but always leaves me fatigue afterwards.
This is my main reason to switch to drink black coffee without sugar. Which also cuts down on sugar intake.
Simply by having them black without milk or sugar dramatically decrease my daily cuppas calories.
Beyond the Bitterness
The process of slowly cutting out sugar and creamer takes time and some small effort.
Let’s look into some of the good things I have to say about Black Coffee.
The main reason people doesn’t like drinking straight black coffee is due to its bitterness.
Yet the benefits a black coffee can provide is well worth it.
Brewing methods, roasting methods, coffee beans variety can all contribute to better tasting coffee that’s not just bitter. Which we cover further down this post.
Benefits of Black Coffee:
Focus on The Bean’s Natural Profile
Black coffee allow the natural flavor of the coffee bean to be the main focus, without being masked by the milk or sugar.
Unsweetened Black Coffee is Low Calorie
A cup of black coffee is literally calorie free, when compared to other sugary beverages.
Unsweetened Drinks are perfect for those who are calorie conscious and trying to maintain healthy calorie intake.
Potential Digestive Benefits
Black coffee can stimulate the digestive system and bowel movement for some people. This for me is an improvement on digestion. And helps promote regular bowel movement.
Downside of Coffee Drinking
However it is important to note on some of the negative side of drinking coffee everyday. As caffeine have a recommended intake of up to 400mg/day, and not recommended for younger children.
Drinking on Empty Stomach may causes Discomfort
Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can cause discomfort. This is because coffee is acidic, and when your stomach is empty, there’s no food to buffer that acidity.
Coffee on empty stomach can lead to irritation in your stomach lining, causing heartburn and other unpleasant feelings.
Drinking Coffee in a Row causes Jitterness
While having 2 to 3 cups of black coffee in a day is okay. If you drink 3 cups in a row over a short time, the caffeine can overload you body and gives you all kinds of jittery feelings.
Drink in moderation to mitigate the chances of this from happening.
Disrupt Sleeps if Consumed Excessively
It’s generally not recommended to drink coffee within 6 hours of bedtime.
Coffee helps with focus and cognitive performance, but taken near bedtime can affect our sleep quality.
This is especially for those that have increased sensitivity to caffeine. It keeps you awake and alert even when you’re tired and wants to sleep.
Tannins in Coffee Stains Teeth
Tannins are present in coffee, just like Tea and Red wine. This compound may stain our teeth and leave them looking less white.
But coffee alone isn’t the main contributor to teeth discoloration, and proper oral hygiene can take care of this problem.
How I Start Drinking Coffee with No Sugar
When I notice my body isn’t react very well to the sugar presented in my daily cuppa, I started to order them with creamer only. And gradually moved to Black coffee after some time.
If you’re interested in Cutting down on sugar you can start out slow like I did.
Start by Ordering them With Less Sugar
For starter you can halved the amount of sugar in your orders. Or just add less sugar into your coffee when the order arrive.
We can slowly get accustomed to the most original flavor of coffee with less sweeteners.
Request for Light or Medium Roast
Coffee come many variations and all of them have different taste. Lighter roast can give a more fruity taste, where Darker roast will be more intense.
I learn to appreciate these instead of the sweetness brought by sugar and milk added in my coffee.
Cold Brew to the Rescue
If these still are doing it for you. Allow me to introduce you to the cold brew method.
Basically you soak finely grounded beans in water overnight or up to 24 hours.
Then strain the coffee to get concentrated, strong coffee, but without much of the bitterness extracted.
Just add some more water to the concentrated coffee and you’re good to go.
I usually prepare this a day ahead and it gives me around 3 to 4 cups worth of coffee through the day.
